NetEase Network Actions/Status

NetEase actively monitors attempted network abuse and maintains effective means of filtering un-solicited mail as well as attempts to relay (bounce) mail through the NetEase network. NetEase has been successful in prosecuting network abuse offenders and our Network Abuse Staff works closely with several Internet providers in matters related to network abuse.

NetEase Mail Servers are protected against un-wanted UCE/UBE utilizing blocking list maintained by various blocking systems available on the Internet. If your e-mail is blocked by one of these blocking list then your server has been identified as a spam source or open relay. Our suggestion is to fix the problem. If you are unable to fix your server, then perhaps you should consider not running such an MTA connected on the Internet.

Has your server or address been blocked?
NetEase maintains router level blocks for networks that are known offenders of our network policies. In most cases this is considered as a last resort method when attempts to stop abuse have failed. If you are a network administrator and you feel that your network has been blocked wrongly, you may contact our office via telephone at 731-845-5640 and ask to speak to the Abuse desk. You may also use our web based form or you will have to obtain e-mail services through a trusted site and e-mail abuse@netease.net with your information. Although our ultimate goal is to provide a free flow of information through our network, we will not tolerate network abuse in any form.

Network abuse will not be tolerated by any individual and offenders may be subject to fines and penalties for damages incurred. These damages include, but are not limited to; Denial of Service attacks created by mass e-mail relay attempts to other providers or repeated un-solicited e-mail attempts to our local servers; Network outages created by attempts to hack network security; Packet flooding created by attempts to block or interfere with network traffic. Charges for labor to clean up and respond to complaints due to network abuse may be as much as $200 per hour. Additionally, in accordance with Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 47, Chapter 18, charges up to $5,000 per day may be imposed to the sender of un-solicited e-mail as illustrated in the following excerpt from this law.

"If the injury arises from the transmission of unsolicited bulk electronic mail, an injured electronic mail service provider may also recover attorneys' fees and costs, and may elect, in lieu of actual damages, to recover the greater of ten dollars ($10.00) for each and every unsolicited bulk electronic mail message transmitted in violation of this article, or five thousand dollars ($5,000) per day." Status

On average, our mail gateways reject an average of 40-50,000 spams per day. That is how many unsolicited messages did not trash our customers e-mail Inbox. NetEase continues to be recognized for our spam fighting efforts in the Internet community.

Outbound SMTP Blocking - Effective February 2004 outbound SMTP traffic will only be permitted to authorized servers. In order to send e-mail you must use smtp.netease.net as your outgoing mail server. If you are not sure how to change your outgoing server please contact the Help Desk at 731-845-5640.

Please note: smtp.netease.net is not accessible outside of the NetEase network.
