A few things you can do to protect your computer:

1. Software upgrades - Microsoft and Netscape have implemented several security features to protect users from malicious code that may pose a risk to your computer. Keeping up to date with the software changes will reduce your risk. Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher has the ability to use Windows Update for program upgrades. Netscape users should upgrade to the latest stable release to take advantage of the changes. For more information on Microsoft Security visit their security site.
2. Virus protection - Install a good virus protection utility and make sure your virus definitions are up to date. Simply having a virus utility installed is useless if the definitions do not include the latest identifier for new viruses. Several new viruses hit the Internet each week. Make sure your virus utility is capable of updating these definitions. If not, we suggest getting one that can do this.
3. Personal firewall - Implementing a personal firewall on your computer is strongly suggested. With the number of users on the Internet growing rapidly there is always a chance that a malicious user may try to breach the security of your computer. A firewall can prevent malicious users from accessing your files and data.
4. Network protocols - Experienced users may want to take a few minutes to ensure that only required protocols are installed and that they are only bound to adapters as needed. If you are running a home network, use caution when implementing File and Printer Sharing. Set up improperly you could be exposing your entire network to the Internet. Items such as "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "File and Printer Sharing" are not required to access the Internet.
5. Malicious Programs - There are many deceiving programs available on the Internet that will gather information from your computer and share it with other sites without your knowledge. In many cases this may just be information such as your browsing habits, etc. However, you should use a utility such as Lavasoft's Ad-aware to detect and remove anything that appears to be suspicious.

•  Zonelabs - PC security including the personal firewall "Zone Alarm". A free version is still available.
